54 Pizza Express in Owensboro will close for a week in July
Just a few days ago I placed a take out order from 54 Pizza Express. I live about five football fields in the west and love their pizza. For Kevin, it’s always half an order of stuffed breadsticks. For me, it’s either a little ham / pineapple or a little Mighty Meat. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention a chess bar for dessert.
My friend Cindy Tong has owned 54 Pizza Express for three decades and there is no doubt that the past fifteen months (due to the variety of issues caused by Covid-19) have been some of the toughest in the restaurant’s history.
For months and months, the meals inside were closed. Both 54 locations were open for delivery or delivery only. Now, as with so many other restaurants and businesses, there are serious problems finding workers to augment the staff.
So Cindy chose to do something amazing. Selfless, really. Just days ago, she announced via social media that 54 Pizza Express would be shutting down for a full week in July. Here’s why . . .
I chatted with Cindy this week and she said, “I’m just trying to give them a real downtime.” The week of July 5, that’s exactly what she’s going to do.
Cindy adds that people everywhere are stressed and we are all trying to understand the “fallout from everything” that the Covid-19 pandemic has left us. Cindy realizes that these issues are national, global, but her power to make a change doesn’t go far. She says, “There is nothing I can do to help (everyone else) but I am able to do something about what is under my control. These are the people in my life.”
Cindy says her staff have been working tirelessly and they would really benefit from a break. “All of the staff worked mainly on the days we were open. Those who were not were busy with a second job or supporting their families, going to school and finding food and supplies for their needs. “
So immediately after the July 4th bank holiday weekend, these 54 dedicated Pizza Express employees will benefit from that much-needed downtime, that well-deserved break. There is no doubt that they deserved it.
So take a rest, the team! While I will definitely miss my Mighty Meat and Bi-Weekly Chess Bar, I’ll take them when you all get back to work.
