£9m star could fit ‘specific profile’ Gerrard wants at Villa Park
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is on the hunt for a new left-back who fits ‘a very specific profile’ amid Villa Park interest in Sergio Gomez, transfer insider claims DeanJones.
The Midlands giants have been busy during the summer transfer window – with Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen as editors – but Gomez could become a fifth addition at the end of the season.
What’s the latest on Gomez?
According to The Athletic, Gomez has made his way onto Villa’s radar and they’ve been following his development at Anderlecht.
The report suggests the 21-year-old is seen as a cheaper alternative to other targets identified by Gerrard, who is preparing for his first full season at the helm after taking charge last November.
Gerrard is on the hunt for an understudy for first-choice left-back Lucas Digne, who made the £25m move from Everton in January.
It comes after Matt Targett made his loan spell at Newcastle United permanent when a £15m deal was agreed last month.
Jones previously told GIVEMESPORT that Gomez has caught the eye of many clubs with his impressive performances for Belgian giants Anderlecht.
What did Dean Jones say about Gomez?
Jones believes Villa turned their attention to Gomez after struggling to identify a left-back who would be willing to play second fiddle to Digne.
The transfer insider believes Gerrard is determined to strengthen his options in the job and has a clear view of the qualities he wants all new faces to have.

When asked if Gomez could be the solution as the Midlands club struggled to sign a Digne understudy, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t know too much about him personally, but that seems to be the situation with Villa.
“They are looking for someone with a very specific profile and someone who will settle for a specific role within the team.
“There are not many players, at the level they are looking for, who are going to settle for that.”
Could Gomez be an exciting addition?
Gomez may be at the start of his career, but he’s already shown he has plenty of potential after being on the books at Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.
Although he played mostly in a defensive role last season, he managed to score 22 goals in 49 outings.
It shows Gomez isn’t afraid to push forward and it’s further heightened by the fact that he has found the back of the net six times and registered as many assists in nine Spanish Under-19 appearances. 21 years old.
The £9million-rated Anderlecht ace posted an average match rating of 7.1 in the 2021/22 campaign, so he could prove to be a shrewd signing for Villa.
