Aston Villa ‘gutted’ after huge blow at Villa Park
Aston Villa were ‘really disappointed’ with the deal which saw midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka move to Chelsea this summer, transfer insider claims DeanJones.
The youngster is considered one of Europe’s most exciting talents but opted to leave Villa Park, leaving many at the West Midlands club frustrated.
What happened with the Chukwuemeka case?
The 18-year-old was one of Villa’s rising stars having spent the last six years in the club’s academy, already making 14 Premier League appearances in that time.
He also became a regular for the England Under-19 outfit, making 11 appearances and scoring five goals, including three as the side won the European U19 Championships this year.
With only one year remaining on his contract, however, there was always a chance of a move away. AC Milan and Barcelona were among the linked clubs, but it was Chelsea who opted for the services of Chukwuemeka, completing a £20million transfer.
He helped take the club’s summer recruitment campaign to five, after Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Gabriel Slonina at the club.
But back at Villa Park, they remain optimistic they will lose one of Europe’s top prospects before he can make his mark.
What did Jones say about the Chukwuemeka deal?
Jones understands Aston Villa remain incredibly disappointed to have lost their youngster this summer, particularly before he had a chance to make an impact in the side.
The transfer insider insists that even the £20m received in exchange wouldn’t be enough to make them feel any better.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “I don’t think there’s really an award for them that would have been good because he’s one of the best young players in the world and they’ll be disgusted that he left them so soon.
“It’s such a difficult thing for these clubs, when you bring in someone so exciting and you can’t bind them to this next deal that really takes value out of it and allows you to bring them into your squad. So they’re really disappointed about that.
What future for Aston Villa?
The club have been linked with a number of midfielders this summer and have already brought in Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer from Marseille.
Ibrahim Sangare has been frequently flagged as a target but so far no concrete approach seems to have been made for his services.
However, it will be interesting to see if that changes following the sale of Chukwuemeka.
