Aston Villa hailed by Hutton as details of Chambers deal emerge

Callum Chambers’ move to Aston Villa was a ‘shock’ to the system – and they deserve credit for closing the deal so quietly.
That’s the view of former Villa defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider on how the 27-year-old left Arsenal.
Villa confirmed on January 27 that Chambers had signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Gunners.
Athletic reported last Monday (January 31) that Arsenal had failed to activate a clause which would have extended his contract for a year before he left the club.
The clause would have expired in December last year.
Chambers had just six months left on his contract at the Emirates at the start of January, which eased the road to his exit.
Hutton praised Villa for the way they completed the deal.
“They were one of the best in terms of the overall window,” he said The football insider’s Russell Edge.
“They identified who they wanted and came out and did the business quietly. There hasn’t been much noise about it.
“The Chambers one, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. It was a total shock.
“It was an area where Gerrard felt he needed depth. He can play in different positions.
“He can do a job as a full-back, centre-half, etc. He is very versatile and of a good age too.
“He will want to kick off and show he has what it takes to be a regular starter.”
Chambers played 122 times for Arsenal after signing from Southampton in 2014.
He could make his Villa debut against Leeds United on Wednesday, February 9.
