Aston Villa to move for James Ward-Prowse from Southampton | Aston Villa
Aston Villa are set to take a step forward for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, a day after securing a record-breaking deal worth over £ 30million to sign Emiliano Buendía from Norwich. Dean Smith is eager to complete transfers as quickly as possible as Villa prepares for another season of Premier League progress.
Villa are said to be keen to bolster their midfield and the prowess of Ward-Prowse, in particular, would bolster their attacking arsenal. This would prove particularly useful if opponents continued to take down Jack Grealish, who has been the most fouled player in the Premier League for each of the past two seasons – despite missing 12 league games with a shin injury last season. .
Ward-Prowse’s eight league goals for Southampton last season included two stunning free kicks in a 4-3 win at Villa Park. He also had seven assists throughout the league campaign and scored his first goal for England in the 5-0 win over San Marino in March.
Smith said he doesn’t plan on making a lot of signings this summer, but wants the few rookies who arrive to have big impacts. Villa has progressed with every season since Smith took office in October 2018 and aims to improve on 11th place last season. Ward-Prowse fits Smith’s criteria in terms of playing attributes as well as his age and level of Premier League experience.
“In terms of recruiting we are talking about the strengths we are looking for,” Smith said this month, “ie the players have Premier League experience and are [ideally] British because there is no risk of adaptation.
