BBC expert blows up manager’s complaint about Aston Villa player
Garth Crooks said he had “never heard such a tosh” after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested that Ollie Watkins breached David de Gea in Aston Villa’s 1-0 win at Manchester United on Saturday, as he told BBC Sport.
The Manchester United boss has claimed Villa’s game-winning goal, which came through the header from Kortney Hause after a corner kick, should have been ruled ‘offside’, as he told Sky Sports.
Watkins was standing close to the United goalkeeper when Hause brought his head home and Solskjaer believes the Villa striker was in the Spaniard’s sights and they were “unhappy” at that point in time. ‘go against them.
Of course, Solskjaer forgets that his side missed many chances during the game, despite Villa winning the game against the Premier League title contenders and playing a high line.
Added to that, it was his expert shooter who decided to detonate his kick over the bar, out of the stadium and out of Manchester.
Nonetheless, Crooks had nothing of what Solskjaer said, as he also felt that the penalty imposed on the home side was “harsh”.
“I thought Hause’s handball penalty was severe,” Crooks said.
“But that was the opinion of referee Mike Dean. He’s not my favorite referee but at least it was his decision and not VAR’s.
“As for Solskjaer complaining about an Ollie Watkins offense on David de Gea for the goal, I’ve never heard such a tosh.”
It was a deserved victory for Dean Smith’s men, who probably should have scored at least two goals in the first half.
Matt Targett missed an open goal when his colleague at the back put the ball in front of the goal, as his shot from the near post went over the bar.
And then Villa’s pressing and aggressive nature forced the home side to make a mistake, with Watkins seeing his shot inside the area saved by Gea’s sprawling.
Man United will also look to efforts they should have put aside, especially Mason Greenwood, who made a number of bad decisions in front of goal.
