Chris Sutton reignites debate over Steven Gerrard’s Rangers exit as Aston Villa claims they caught co-host off guard

Chris Sutton reckons Steven Gerrard would leave Rangers for Aston Villa if he got the chance.

But not everyone agrees, judging by the surprise response from co-host Robbie Savage.

Sutton was speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, discussing the aftermath of Villa’s 4-1 loss to West Ham.

A frustrated Villa fan called and suggested it was time for boss Dean Smith to leave after their rocky start to the Premier League season.

And when asked who he wanted to replace him, the answer was simple: “Steven Gerrard”.

The fan himself didn’t seem sure Gerrard would take the job and was reluctant to give an answer when asked if Villa was a bigger club than Rangers.

It was then that Sutton intervened: “Steven Gerrard would accept the position of Villa.

Co-host Robbie Savage sounded skeptical when he replied, “Would he do it?”

But Sutton didn’t budge, saying, “If we offered him the job, he would.”

Gerrard was reluctant to get caught up in speculation about his future, dodging various questions when asked about the vacant Newcastle post.

The Liverpool hero’s consistent message is that he is focused on life at Rangers and retains the Scottish Premiership title.

His side have just taken a four-point lead over rivals Celtic with a landslide 6-1 victory over Motherwell. They will face Brondby in the Europa League midweek in hopes of advancing to the knockout stages for the third season in a row.

Villa’s 4-1 loss to West Ham leaves them 15th in the Premier League table and looks the barrel of a relegation if their poor form is not stopped soon.
