Filing ITR AY 2022-23 Live: Extension of last tax filing date denied; avoid up to Rs 5000 penalty
Filing of AY 2022-23 tax return Last live update July 31: Over 33 lakh ITR have been deposited till 4pm today. The deadline for filing the ITR for the financial year 2021-22 (AY 2022-23) is today, failing which there will be a penalty for latecomers from tomorrow. There is a fine of up to Rs 5000 on late filing of ITR, which can be done till 31st December 2022. 31st July is the last date to file ITR of AY 2022-23 for employees wage earners and Hindu Undivided Families (HUF) whose accounts do not need to be audited.
According to the Income Tax Department, over 5 crore ITR have been deposited till July 30. The total number of RTIs deposited is expected to increase further on the due date, which is today. The government has so far denied any extension of the ITR filing deadline. With so many ITRs already filed, the government is unlikely to extend the due dates. However, some taxpayers and professionals are still hoping for a last-minute surprise.
