Holland & Barrett continues its steady growth in co-packing and invests in new ranges
BRC Level A certification, a Soil Association accredited site, has been operational for the retailer’s wide range of supplements since 2011 and the expanded facility now has the capability to pack 24/7, depending demand, and employs 240 employees and agency colleagues.
Tony Barlow, Operations Manager, saw the opportunity to offer the spare capacity and years of experience and knowledge for the new co-packing service.
After an initial risk assessment prior to sale, third-party customers send their raw materials to be packaged with their own components or supplied by H&B.
The merchant can offer packaging made of recyclable materials.
The mixing room can sometimes hold up to 22 ingredients per SKU and expand into multiple types of flavors.
The line of powders and mixers expands the capability to other projects such as cake and brownie mixes, pancake and donut mixes, and gluten-free flour mixes.
This new project has been in expansion for more than two years, and Barlow said it has become an established and recognized entity in the factory with recent sales growth of 60%.
Barlow said: “We have invested in new production lines for all areas and continue to do so to maintain a high level of quality. We are seeing an increase due to suppliers wanting to pack in the UK, and because they like H&B to do the packing – which is good marketing for them, and because other co-packers have trouble with the volume.
