‘I take care of myself’: Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez shares injury fears ahead of World Cup
The Aston Villa goalkeeper is hoping to avoid injury during the club’s busy schedule ahead of the World Cup in November.
Emiliano Martinez has revealed his fear of injury during Aston Villa’s busy schedule in October and November ahead of Argentina’s World Cup campaign.
The keeper is currently on international duty with his country for their friendlies against Honduras and Jamaica on Saturday and Wednesday.
Martinez has featured in all eight of Villa’s games so far this season and is expected to start between the sticks when the Premier League returns in October.
The Villans travel to Leeds United on October 2 in the first of eight league matches before the start of the World Cup. They will also face Manchester United in the third round of the EFL Cup 10 days before the start of the domestic competition.
Martinez admitted he did everything he could to avoid injury during his club’s busy schedule, including avoiding bread and drinking cola.
“When we come back from this tour, there’s October left and nothing else,” Martinez told Argentine newspaper Clarín via sports witness.
“I was just talking about it with my brother, that in October we have nine or ten games with Aston Villa between now and the World Cup, which will pass very quickly. That’s why we enjoy this tour with the boys because it’s is the last.
“I said this year I was going to prepare like I’ve never done in my life, but when you play so many games it’s more about recovery and fear of not getting hurt. There’s no time for anything now.
“Now someone gets injured for four to six weeks and is already half a foot away from the World Cup.
“It’s normal for the player to be scared. I take care of myself more than ever. I try not to touch the bread. I win a game and I want a cola and I don’t want it. These are things that I change to have the least risk of injury possible.
The 30-year-old joined Villa from Arsenal for £17million in September 2020 and has since made 83 appearances for them in all competitions.
Martinez represented Argentina 17 times and helped them win the 2021 Copa America after keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Brazil in the final.
