Ireland is a country known for its love of food with four major supermarkets that we’ve all shopped from time to time, but where are the biggest stores in the country?

We did some research to find the biggest supermarkets in the country and what they have to offer compared to standard size stores.

Here are the biggest stores of the big chains, Dunnes Store, Tesco, Lidl and Supervalu:

Dunnes Stores

Some of the country’s largest supermarkets are owned by Dunnes Stores, including the largest chain stores in Blanchardstown and Donaghmede which measures 110,000 square feet.

The huge stores offer departments such as clothing, school wear, groceries, license free, parking, housewares, cosmetics, Cinder’s shoe stores and a cafe.

Tesco

The Liffey Valley Shopping Center store on Fonthill Road, Dublin, opened in 2018 and is Ireland’s largest Tesco.

The massive cost of 30 million euros to set up the new store has created 175 new jobs in the locality, and a Vision Express, Costa Coffee Shop and Holland and Barrett’s can be found inside.

The huge Tesco measures an impressive 60,000 square feet, leaving plenty of space for many departments like fresh food, groceries, alcohol, O&M clothing, toys and housewares.

Liffey Valley Tesco also donates any extra food in stock to food charities avoiding unnecessary food waste.

Lidl

In 2015, Lidl opened its largest store in Ireland on Arklow Road in Wexford with the help of rugby star Gordon Darcy.

The store was the first of its kind to be built in Ireland and saw a multi-million dollar investment to demolish the existing store and rebuild a new one in just over five months.

The largest Lidl is only half the size of Ireland’s largest Tesco, at 30,000 square feet.

The layout includes wider aisles, an expanded bakery, and more extensive staff and customer facilities.

Supervisor

Glanmire Supervalu in the Crestfield Center, Glanmire, Cork is the largest Supervalu in the country.

The store opened as Centra in 1996, measuring 3,500 square feet, but has been expanded to 28,000 square feet to meet the needs of the community of Glanmire.

With multi-story parking and over 250 spaces, a wide selection of fresh bread made from scratch in its own bakery, and healthy breakfasts available from its state-of-the-art gourmet counter, Glanmire Supervalu has a lot to offer.
