The #MeToo movement won’t be derailed by Depp v Heard – Emma Thompson

Dame Emma Thompson says she believes the #MeToo movement “is not going to derail” by the Depp v Heard trial.

Speaking to the BBC Radio 4 program women’s hour On Thursday, the actor said, “One of the hard things to do is judge an issue like the issues that the #MeToo movement brings up when you’re dealing with very, very, very famous people. That’s a whole other thing, so actually one of the big issues with this case is celebrity and how famous people are treated differently and seen differently.

“I would say that the #MeToo movement is not going to go off the rails for this, but in order for it not to go off the rails, you just have to keep talking. Gotta keep talking and deny he’s derailed by a case [involving] two very, very, very famous people, who were blown out of all human proportion.

She added: “A case where the two protagonists are so famous is not representative. And it’s just very important to remember that. That this movement, which is about human kindness and which is so simple, really, and which has been made so complicated, cannot and won’t be derailed by a single case.

“That’s not going to happen, actually. It just won’t happen.
