Lampard satisfied with ‘brilliant’ Rüdiger as Tomori may approach January loan
Antonio Rüdiger made his first Premier League appearance of the season on Saturday. And it was … good.
It was only his second start and his third overall appearance for Chelsea, but those numbers all point in a positive direction. Just a few weeks ago, Toni looked one foot out the door. He now appears to be the third-choice center-back and Thiago Silva’s favorite assistant.
And while he was synonymous last season with a defense that did not meet expectations, he has yet conceded a goal this season. Lampard is obviously hoping that this trend will continue, which would justify his choice to pick the older player over the youngest Academy graduates in Fikayo Tomori and Andreae Christensen.
“I was happy with his performance. I talked about it before the game that a lot of managers would like to have five center-backs, but that poses challenges because you can only choose two if you’re playing in a back four and two or three are unhappy. It is not easy to enter directly into a team if it is not to play so regularly and perform. This means that you need the right attitude throughout the week and the right attitude in the way they prepare.
“I trust Toni. I think he came and thought his performance alongside Kurt was very strong. Everything that went into the box, they handled very well. They had a lot of the ball and they moved it well. I’m really happy because it’s extremely important to have a strong team this year with the calendar as it is. For Toni to come and play and keep his clean sheet was great for him and great for me ”

So that’s certainly a strong praise for the 27-year-old.
It is perhaps not surprising that rumors of a January loan for Fikayo Tomori are also starting to surface with greater regularity – which is increasingly needed as Tomori has been largely ignored by Lampard (see also : Christensen).
Tomori’s situation is not terrible but I hope things will improve soon. Meanwhile, it’s nice to see Rüdiger come in effectively. Thiago Silva can’t play every game!
I expect an early loan for Fikayo Tomori as soon as the January window opens. I wouldn’t be surprised if this deal is already close to being done

The Chelsea side to face Newcastle stress that Fikayo Tomori needs a loan in January. He turned down the option to go to West Ham late in the last window because he didn’t believe David Moyes would play him regularly, but it was wasted months at Cobham #CFC
