Live Champions League draw (again): redrawing fallout and latest updates as COVID-19 threatens Manchester United against Brentford
The UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw was the subject of controversy on Monday, with Manchester United defeating Paris Saint-Germain after the Premier League club were accidentally excluded from part of the draw.
As the draw was made in Nyon, there was a hiccup when Villarreal was initially drawn against United. But with the two teams already meeting in Group F, ex-Arsenal striker Andrey Arshavin has been asked to draw another team.
But United’s ball was not included in the draw when Arshavin lured Atletico Madrid – despite the Premier League club being a legitimate potential opponent for the Spanish team.
Instead, Liverpool’s ball was included in the pot of potential opponents Atletico despite Jurgen Klopp’s side playing the Spanish club in the group stage.
Atletico Madrid were then drawn against Bayern Munich and Athletic understand that the Spanish team are very frustrated with the errors in the draw given that they were subsequently drawn to play against the strongest team in Europe according to the UEFA club coefficient system.
And United have been given a sort of draw against Paris Saint-Germain, which will see former enemies Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi resume their long-standing personal rivalry.
There is no indication yet that UEFA could redo the draw.
