Matt and Lori go to Cheba Hut for a taste test

Weed-themed sub-channel Cheba Hut has been curing Milwaukeean cravings for about a month now since opening at the former Five Guys and Blaze Pizza near the UWM campus at 2907 N. Oakland Ave. – so it seemed high time for Lori and me too puff take a puff a look.

In place of Blaze Pizza is now a monument serving meals to blaze up, with walls covered in a psychedelic Wonda-themed mural across “SnickleSchlitz Brewery” as well as a collection of movie posters from classic stoner and weed themed artwork.

All of this was to be expected; What was unexpected, however, had to do with a different attitude-altering substance, as Cheba Hut comes with a full bar inside – and quite substantial – featuring beer, cocktails, and more. So even though you’ll need to bring your own high (thank you very much, government of Wisconsin), you can get a buzz.

The menu keeps the party going with a range of ‘munchies’ (sides), ‘cotton mouthpicks’ (drinks) and ‘grilled’ subs that come in three sizes: a four inch ‘nugget’, an eight inch “pinner” and a one foot long “blunt”. The sandwiches themselves come in the form of a chronic (barbecue roast beef), sensi kush (BLT), popular white widow (chicken, bacon, and ranch), Pacific blue (background tuna) and many more – including two local favorites in their ‘secret stash’, the Skywalker and the Barry White. The “grilled” subs claim isn’t just marketing on the theme, as the sandwiches are hot, slightly crispy, and smell great after a quick bake.

The only thing missing from the marijuana-filled menu: any real weed or even any CBD seasoning. (Again: thanks again, Wisco politician.) But between all the decor, the themed menu, and the smell of freshly grilled ingredients, you could always grab a secondhand high inside Cheba Hut.
