Papa John’s new “pizza” is very different
While the biggest pizza debate of our time may be whether the pineapple belongs in one, the crust itself is no less a point of contention.
Pasty, or thin and burned by the fire? Deep dish or, as some may remember from old Pizza Hut commercials from the early years, stuffed with cheese? While some will die arguing that the crust is the best part of the whole pizza, others will throw it away before moving on to the second slice.
The fast food zeitgeist has, over the past decade, definitely favored those who choose to forgo or even minimize carbs – the gluten-free food market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.3% to reach $10.96 billion from 2022 to 2029.
Is the gluten-free craze over or just beginning?
Different years have brought with them different versions of the low-carb diet — in 2019, online searches for the high-fat “ketogenic” diet hit 17 million per month.
While this sometimes stems from the needs of people with celiac disease or other insensitivities, it may also reflect an inaccurate public understanding of nutrition.
At the height of the gluten-free diet’s popularity in 2013, Mintel researchers also found that 65% of Americans believed products labeled “gluten-free” were healthier for them.
Another 27% bought them to lose weight.
Fast food chains, in turn, have been only too happy to operate with some people’s desire to cut carbs. Chipotle (GCM) – Get the Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. report. popularized the burrito bowl, which mixes the tortilla for a salad-style burrito toppings.

Daddy Johns (PZZA) – Get the report from Papa John’s International Inc.the Georgia-based pizza chain whose owner was ousted by the company in 2018 after using racial slurs on a conference call, recently announced it was launching Papa Bowls: a bowl of pizza ingredients like cheese, marinara sauce and meat or vegetables.
What is a Pizza Bowl?
Starting August 22, Papa Bowls will be available at locations across the country for $7.99 (exact price may vary slightly due to local ingredient costs). They will come in the flavors of Italian Meat Trio, Chicken Alfredo, and Garden Vegetables.
“We are very excited to offer Papa Bowls as a new menu category and as a new way for consumers to experience our premium ingredients,” said Scott Rodriguez, Senior Vice President of Menu Strategy. and products at Papa John’s, in a media release. . “Our signature crust continues to be a beloved favorite, but we know sometimes customers are looking for something different.”
Loyal channel members will be able to get the bowls on August 15, a week earlier than everyone else.
The idea of the pizza bowl had already appeared in Miam! Brands (YUM) – Get yum! Report Brands Inc. The South Korean Pizza Hut franchise but, in this case, it still had a container-like crust to fill with ingredients.
Back home, however, the big chains have largely retained *some* kind of crust to keep ingredients from mixing together – usually it’s the cauliflower pizza crust that has recently become popular with followers of low carbohydrate diets.
“We want them to know that we’re committed to satisfying all those cravings through our menu,” Rodriguez said.
