Report: Aston Villa could loan out Jed Steer
Aston Villa is ready to loan Jed Steer this summer, with The Sun on Sunday (30/5; page 59) report that Dean Smith wants to recruit a new goalie this summer.
The Villans have already seen a plug leave the club early in the window.
Villa confirmed on their official website that Tom Heaton has moved on. Reports suggest he is destined to return to Manchester United.
Some may have speculated that this would let Steer take on the role of Emi Martinez’s understudy before next season.
The 28-year-old was on the bench throughout the first half of this final campaign as Heaton recovered from his injury. He also returned to the substitute role a few times in the final weeks of the season.
But it looks like he’s actually going to be lucky enough to get a move.
From The Sun on Sunday (30/5; page 59)Steer should be given the green light to go on loan for a championship team.
It is claimed that a new signing may well compete for Martinez at Villa Park.
Aston Villa leaving Steer on loan should put several Championship teams on alert
Steer has already proven himself to be a very good goalkeeper on loan.
He played 38 times at the second tier with Huddersfield, while he was excellent during his time with Charlton Athletic in the 2018/19 season.
Its availability should therefore put several Championship teams on alert.
But Villa shouldn’t close the door to keep him either. As a replacement, he’s arguably a very decent understudy for Martinez.
Of course, there may be better options available in the market. But signing while Martinez is number one may not be easy for the Villans.
So while it may be good news for Steer’s own career if he were to seal a loan, Villa might not care too much if he ends up replacing Heaton next season.
