Seaweed-based snack line earns first national supermarket listing
After launching its range of sustainable seaweed snacks in the UK a year ago, SHORE has secured its first national supermarket listing. From June 20, its 25g Sweet Sriracha seaweed crisps (RRP £1) will be rolled out to 174 Morrisons stores.
Part of a trio of crisp flavors from the Scottish seaweed company, it is also tweaking its range to comply with the HFSS standard and will make the switch later this year.
SHORE’s philosophy revolves around the nature of sustainable seaweed harvesting that works in unison with the environment while providing employment to its local rural communities. Based in Wick, in the far northeast of Scotland, the team of 15 harvest the seaweed by hand and then process it into vegan, gluten-free and low-calorie super grain crisps.
The chips are also available on Amazon and the Holland & Barrett website, as well as Scottish Sainsbury’s and Co-op stores.
“Our mission is to create a large-scale edible seaweed industry in Scotland that is 100% sustainable,” said SHORE co-founder Keith Paterson. “We create delicious, plant-based seaweed snacks that appeal to the growing number of health-conscious mainstream consumers who are increasingly looking for sustainably sourced foods, and our crisps are a great entry point for anyone. never tried seaweed before.”
The brand pointed out that the seaweed snacks business has grown by over 30% in the past 12 months and is now worth over £4million at retail. SHORE shipped over 400,000 packs of its seaweed crisps in 2021, its first full year after launch.
Paterson added: “One of the big challenges in snacking this year is how to deliver flavor while still being HFSS compliant. Consumers do not want to compromise on the taste of snacks. New products that don’t deliver flavor and texture won’t last. Our fries are currently being redeveloped to be HFSS compliant while still being fried for the right taste and texture, without losing any of their unique nutrients or flavor profile, and this puts the brand in a very exciting space. This has energized our conversations with retailers as they seek compliant products that still deliver flavor, as evidenced by Morrisons’ nationwide launch.
