Steven Gerrard gets ‘green light’ to seal Aston Villa’s first transfer
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has reportedly been given the green light to make signing a midfielder a priority when the transfer window opens in January.
The wonderful Nakamba is sidelined with a knee injury as the Zimbabwean underwent successful surgery after being substituted in the 1-0 loss to Liverpool a few weekends ago.
He has become a key player for Gerrard, impressive since the Liverpool legend moved to Villa from Rangers early last month.
Axel Tuanzebe replaced the defensive midfielder in the dying minutes of the 2-0 victory at Norwich City last week. Gerrard glanced at the loaned Manchester United player in the 24-year-old center-back position.
Douglas Luiz can play at the base of a three-way midfielder, but has shown his position to be on one side of a traditional defensive midfielder, and so is John McGinn.
The Mirror reports that Gerrard was given the “green light” to sign a new midfielder in January due to the importance of the position in his system.
Gerrard has reportedly asked sporting director Johan Lange to consider possible targets to replace Nakamba.
The Villa boss was coy about any potential January move in light of the injury to Nakamba, who is expected to be out for up to four months.
“I don’t think I’m going to give anything in terms of potential targets or areas where I want to improve,” Gerrard said.
“I think you’ll just have to wait and see what we do. Right now the transfer window is closed, so the focus right now is on what we have available from here on out.
“We have players who can play in that sixth position. We are not in an emergency.”
Villa could struggle to recruit potential players given the extent of the coronavirus outbreaks in squads.
Clubs are expected to keep players they would usually allow to leave in case they need to be replaced.
