Team Abilene High tennis defeats Byron Nelson in region quarter-finals
The Abilene High School tennis team was not going to be the second surprise of the Byron Nelson Trophy Club, winning the area playoffs Thursday 10-2 in Stephenville.
The Eagles (24-7) took a 5-2 lead after the doubles and won four boys ‘singles games and one girls’ singles game to reach 10 wins and clinch victory at Tarleton State.
“My kids tried hard today,” said AHS coach Stacy Bryan. âThey showed a lot of heart and determination. We had a big three-set victory after losing the first set in the No. 1 women’s doubles. It gave us a 5-2 lead after the doubles instead of 4. -3. It was a huge change in momentum. “

Byron Nelson, the No. 4 seed in District 4-6A has already knocked out a district champion and was looking to defeat the finalist 2-6A. But the Bobcats only got two wins, No.2 and 3 girls doubles, and couldn’t get another upset.
All three women’s doubles matches were played in straight sets with Kaitlyn Strain and Charlie Anderson winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No.1. Strain also won the only women’s singles match to be completed. , claiming the No. 1 victory at 6-1, 6-0.
The AHS boys were once again strong. Griffin Sullivan and Jayton Aston, James Wellborn and Landon Morris and Rolando Rivera and Ben Neie have won their three doubles matches, as has Frank Fang with Holland Wiggins in mixed doubles. Sullivan, Wellborn, Morris and Rivera also won their singles matches.
