US sends 1 million doses of J&J covid-19 vaccine to South Korea
US ships one million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s unique covid-19 vaccine to South Koreaa spokesman for the US State Department said on Friday, a day after President Joe Biden presented his plan to share vaccine doses around the world.
“One million J&J vaccines are intended for our partners in the Republic of Korea. With these doses, we are ensuring the security and preparedness of the forces of the Republic of Korea and the United States. The friendship between our two countries runs deep, especially in times of great need, ”spokesman Ned Price said in a Twitter post.
Reservations for incoming U.S. doses – nearly double the amount originally pledged by Washington – have already been taken, Seoul officials said earlier this week. Infections are declining in South Korea, which has so far administered enough doses to inoculate around 9% of its population, Reuters data show.
Thursday, Biden revealed how his administration would distribute 25 million excess doses around the world, including six million shared between South Korea, Mexico, Canada, India, West Bank and Gaza, among other partner countries and UN frontline workers.
Another five million will go to African countries, seven million to Asian countries and six million to South and Central American countries, according to the White House.
South Korea, a key US ally in Asia, has been the second nation to be greeted by Biden when he greeted South Korean President Jae-in at the White House last month.
At the time, Moon said Biden pledged 550,000 doses of covid-19 vaccine for South Korean soldiers. Biden said on Thursday the United States was sharing its doses to end the pandemic, which has killed more than 3.7 million people worldwide, not to wrest political favors.
