Yum China Launches First KFC Green Pioneer Stores in Hangzhou and Beijing
“We are committed to making meaningful change and pioneering the restaurant industry towards net zero emissions. Building green pioneer stores is an important part of our journey,” said Joey WatCEO of yum china. “We will continue to explore the use of innovative technologies in building and operating restaurants to promote sustainability and contribute to the low-carbon economy.”
Guided by yum china 4R principles (reduce, reuse, recycle and replace), KFC has already incorporated energy saving, emission reduction, plastic reduction and other environmentally friendly measures in its stores across the country. Green Pioneer stores use advanced low-carbon technologies in their construction and day-to-day operations. Compared to the average GHG emissions of KFC stores in 2020, Green Pioneer stores are expected to further reduce GHG emissions by approximately 15% per year.
- Renewable energy / Solar energy: At KFC’s Green Pioneer Store in Hangzhou, solar panels are installed on the roof of the store, generating approximately 10,000 kWh of solar energy each year, reducing carbon emissions from electricity consumption. An advanced energy storage system is integrated to further improve energy efficiency.
- Intelligent IoT-based energy management: An intelligent restaurant energy management system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) improves the energy efficiency of Green Pioneer Stores, using technologies such as IoT, big data and artificial intelligence ( IA) to effectively reduce energy consumption by approximately 10% per year.
- Natural lighting: Green Pioneer stores are equipped with a tubular natural lighting system to make full use of natural lighting. This allows customers to take advantage of natural light while reducing electricity consumption.
- Solar Powered Outdoor Umbrellas: Solar powered outdoor umbrellas are provided for outdoor seating. Thanks to integrated solar panels, the parasols generate electricity for night lighting.
- New environmentally friendly materials: Recycled materials, such as ceramic floor tiles made through the energy recycling process, low-carbon bamboo materials, and a leather alternative made from recycled KFC coffee grounds, are applied in the construction and furnishing of Green Pioneer stores. All of these recycling initiatives contribute to reducing GHG emissions in the construction and operation of stores.
Green Pioneer Stores allow customers to experience and learn about eco-friendly restaurants through “green interior design”. At KFC’s Green Pioneer Store in beijing, a special Family Bucket located in the store is made entirely of recycled KFC food packaging, showcasing the artistic charm of turning waste into resources. Meanwhile, at KFC’s Green Pioneer Store in Hangzhoua section of wall was intentionally left unfinished with an opening to show customers the eco-friendly construction process, including reducing construction waste by decorating the store’s existing walls.
yum china uses multiple channels to promote more sustainable lifestyles and educate customers about environmentally responsible behavior. A “Virtual Green Store” launched on KFC’s Super APP in early April calls for more than 330 million KFC members to come together to promote sustainable lifestyles. It motivates customers to adopt low-carbon behavior, such as refusing disposable cutlery and mobile ordering, and engages customers in carbon reduction and environmentally friendly activities.
Since 2017, 100% of newly built KFC restaurants in China comply with yum china Green building standards, taking full account of environmental factors such as environmentally friendly materials, energy efficient installations, indoor air quality and thermal comfort control systems. Meanwhile, energy-efficient and low-carbon operations for restaurants have been prioritized to reduce GHG emissions. yum china has continuously upgraded its equipment and facilities with advanced technologies such as Value Added Technology Application (VTA) system and IoT to promote digitalization, automation and intelligence of its stores. To reduce GHG emissions in its logistics and warehousing, yum china developed the Transportation Management System (TMS) to optimize its nationwide distribution network and route planning, vehicle loading rates and delivery mileage. Besides, yum china finds ways to support and cooperate with its supply chain partners to measure, reduce and report their GHG emissions.
yum china is committed to establishing a responsible ecosystem in collaboration with its stakeholders throughout the value chain. From green buildings and green operations to sustainable packaging and green waste disposal, among other initiatives, yum china sustainability strategy is effectively integrated into its long-term business growth strategy.
